YOUR QUIT TEAM IS A TRAPEZE AND A NET

Don’t confuse these people with your network. They’re part of your network, yes, but they’re just a portion. Your Quit Team is a support system. It can be a remarkable combination of both trapeze (helping you find and take next steps) and net (helping you with slips and falls).

If you ever find yourself stalled or derailed in your quit process, that’s the time to ask for Quit Team support. Do you need accountability (a coach)? Emotional support (a stakeholder)? Or do you need strategy, experience, and connections (partners and mentors)?

For each of the four categories, try to identify at least one possible team member. Start with a stakeholder—often a spouse or close family member. You’ll need their support first and foremost.

Resist the urge to do this step later. You will learn an incredible amount from every person on your team, and the sooner you can connect to them, the more pitfalls you can avoid, and the more opportunities you will have.

You may find you don’t have a person for every category. That’s okay. Not every quit needs a big team. Not everyone needs a coach. But no quit should be entirely solitary. Everyone needs at least one close stakeholder, even if it’s just for moral support and encouragement.
